How Will I Feel During Detox?

If you have a substance abuse problem and are interested in getting your life back on track, one of the first things you must do is go through detoxification. Not only will this put you on the path to success, but it will go a long way in helping you avoid a relapse down the road.

Even though you are well aware that detox is necessary, this does not change the fact that you are sure to feel poorly along the way. As you wean your body off of drug or alcohol use, you are likely to face a variety of withdrawal symptoms.

Note: if you truly want to make it through detoxification in a successful manner, it is a must that you avoid the use of drugs and/or alcohol during this time. You may experience cravings, however, giving in to them will only put you back at square one.

Some of the withdrawal symptoms you may face include:

  • Sweating
  • Shaky hands
  • Mild anxiety
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Insomnia
  • Headache

In most people, it does not take long after beginning detox to experience some or all of these symptoms. You can expect these symptoms to come about within 12 to 24 hours.

When you go through detoxification at a substance abuse treatment facility, you can be rest assured that a qualified and experienced medical staff will watch over you the entire time. Additionally, they are able to prescribe medication that will help you fight against withdrawal symptoms, making it easier for you to complete this stage of recovery without too much discomfort.

How you feel during detox will depend on many factors, including the finer details of your substance abuse as well as your body. You should expect some symptoms, but always remember that the end result is going to be a better life.
