It is advised to seek help when quitting an addictive substance such as alcohol. This is because there can be adverse effects to the withdrawal period that can put your health and life at risk. Seeking treatment for your alcohol addiction can also increase your chances of success in sobriety.

This is not always an option for everyone. Some have personal and family responsibilities that they can not leave behind for treatment. For those quitting drinking on their own is the only option. If you are quitting drinking on your own there are some things that can help.

Admitting You Have A Problem

The first step on the road to recovery is admitting you have a problem and seeking help for it. You can turn to friends and family for help or to a medical professional. They will guide you to help you get the help you need to recovery, this can be done at home or within a treatment facility.

When quitting drinking it is important to remove temptation from your life. Going through your home to remove and alcohol or alcohol related items will help remove the temptation from your home. Avoid your regular drinking spots such as bar and restaurants you would normally spend time drinking at. You may even want to avoid spending time with your regular drinking buddies to rid yourself of temptation while you are in the beginning stages of your recovery.

The most popular self help group for those with alcohol abuse problems is Alcoholics Anonymous, AA. There you will be able to share your experiences with others and gain hope in your sobriety as well as the tools you need to maintain your sobriety. You will have a sponsor who will be there day and night to offer you support is temptations strikes. You will be able to prevent relapse with the help of others who have been where you are today and take comfort in knowing that it will get easier each day.
